Over the years, granite has gotten somewhat of a bad rap. There are countless myths floating around about granite that many people believe as fact. Let’s debunk five of the most common granite myths!
MYTH: Granite is expensive: Are there cheaper alternatives to granite? Yes. However, granite is no longer as expensive as it once was due to an increase in mining and production companies as well as the long-term popularity of the stone. We aren’t saying that granite will be as cheap as laminate by any means, but it is much more affordable now than it was years ago. In fact, here at Ventura Stone, our granite countertops start at just $29.99 per square foot! We guarantee that the extra money you spend on the stone will be well worth it because it will last for years to come.
MYTH:
Granite is high-maintenance: Though granite requires sealing, it is not nearly as stain-prone, absorbents, or scratch-prone as people say. On the contrary, granite is scratch, stain, heat, and chemical resistant. It is one of the hardest, most durable stone surfaces on the market for countertops. Sealing is required to ensure the stone stands up to the messes thrown at it, but even by itself granite is hardy and easy to care for. Simply wipe up spills when they happen and use granite-appropriate cleaners regularly and you should have no problems keeping your granite countertop looking new.
MYTH:
Granite can harbor unhealthy bacteria:
This myth got started when people spread the idea that granite is a very porous stone. While there are some pores in the stone, and certain slabs are more absorbent than others, for the most part granite is very water resistant. Any deeper pores can easily be filled with sealant, a suggested part of granite ownership. Because of the shallow pores granite naturally has, it is actually very resistant to bacteria. With few pores to collect water and debris, there is nowhere for harmful bacteria to grow and live. There is no more bacteria on a granite countertop than there is on any other type of counter service.
MYTH:
Granite countertops can withstand any amount of heat: Yes, granite is heat resistant. However, many cellphones are water resistant and yet we keep them away from water. The same is true for granite. You can put relatively hot pots and pans on granite occasionally, but it is certainly not recommended to do so every time you cook a meal. Cell Phones can get wet in the rain every so often, but you wouldn’t want to leave it in a puddle every day. If you do expose your countertop to excessive amounts of heat, you risk ruining the finish and discoloring the stone.
MYTH:
Stains in your Granite are Permanent: This is very much a myth. Granite is stain resistant to begin with, and sealant helps as well. However, if you do stain your granite you don’t need to worry about it being there forever. There are pastes or scrubs available on the market to draw stains out of the rock. Some “stains” are not stains at all and are actually just some residue from a messy meal or spill. These “stains” can be cleaned up with granite safe soap or a special stone cleaner. As with most things, if you neglect your granite counters for a long period of time and let stains and debris pile up, the harder it will be to remove said stains when the time comes. With the amount of cleaners available these days, we would be impressed if you can’t get stains out.
These are only five of the most common myths about granite. There are many more out there, but most of them are just that- myths. Granite is a wonderful option for countertops. If it weren’t, why would it be such a popular choice for so many years? If you’re interested in adding granite to your home, give Ventura Stone a call at for a free estimate!
